2007 - Mature Teen Homestay Program - Qingdao, China

Location:

Your language adventure takes place in glorious Qingdao which offers a unique blend of sea and mountains in a pleasant temperate climate. Set at the tip of the Shandong Peninsula on the shores of the Yellow Sea, this fascinating region has been at the heart of China’s culture for over 6000 years. The city of Qingdao today benefits from a rich history of colonial influence. Thanks to an era of German influence, the city is also famous as the beer capital of China and well known Tsingtao beer.

The Course:

Chinese lessons are organized in sessions of 4 x 50 minutes with a total of 60 lessons offered over the three week period.  All lessons take place in Qingdao at the Ocean University campus in air conditioned classrooms.

The curriculum is adapted for all levels from beginner to advanced by fully-qualified and engaging teachers who are native Chinese speakers and are eager to share both their language and culture with students.  For beginners, emphasis is on developing oral fluency using simple and practical phrases with an introduction to basic chinese characters.  If you have previously studied Chinese, teachers will help you build on what you already know.

Culture Program:

In Qingdao, you will participate in a number of activities geared to providing a better understanding of Chinese culture.  These include introductory lessons in Qi Gong, Tai Chi, calligraphy, paper cutting and listening to Chinese music.  You will also enjoy full-day excursions to places such as Mount Laoshan where you will visit Taoist temples and sample famous Laoshan green tea. Half-day excursions as well as afternoon and evening activities that include visits to Underwater World as well as beach visits and tours of local museums are also part of the weekly schedule.

Accommodation:

You will be accommodated with warm and wecoming host families who are very eager to share their time and Chinese culture with you.  Host families typically live in modern and comfortable apartments in central Qingdao approximately 10 to 15 minutes from the school by convenient bus or inexpensive taxi.  You will be given a  private room and will share the rest of the home with your hosts.
